The Importance of Career Placement for High School Students

Think you need a college degree to succeed? Think again. Skilled trades careers are rewriting the rules, and high school students across Alabama are leading the charge. Through real work, real pay, and real futures, skilled trades careers offer the stability and success many young people are looking for, including direct career placement opportunities while still in high school.
At the Academy of Craft Training (ACT), we work with high school juniors and seniors, not post-grads, to prepare them for rewarding careers. These include careers in commercial construction, HVACR mechanical systems, commercial electrical, and industrial metal fabrication.
Additionally, we offer interior/exterior finishes training exclusively at our Birmingham campus. We’re Alabama’s only public/private partnership for skilled trades education, and our impact is growing every year. At Academy of Craft Training, we enroll over 750 students each year and provide tuition-free training, paid internships, and direct employer connections that lead to successful career placement before our students even graduate.
Skilled Trades Careers Are Always in Demand
There’s never been a better time to pursue skilled trades careers. Across Alabama, cities are expanding, aging infrastructure needs repairs, and companies are competing for trained workers. These careers aren’t going away and they can’t be outsourced or automated.
What makes us unique at ACT is our direct alignment with industry. Every training pathway is built in partnership with employers to meet actual workforce needs. That means students graduate not only job-ready, but also connected to the very companies hiring in Alabama right now. It’s this intentional alignment that makes our career placement model so successful. We don’t treat career readiness as an afterthought. We build it into everything we do.
Our Students Don’t Wait to Graduate College to Get Hired
While many high school students are still deciding what to do after senior year, ACT students are already working in the field. Through our paid internship-to-hire pipeline, they’ve logged more than 100,000 work hours with Alabama construction companies. This hands-on experience directly supports long-term career placement and future success.
These internships aren’t just short-term experiences. Many turn into full-time offers because employers trust ACT students to deliver. That’s the difference: we train students not just for skills but for reliability, safety, and jobsite readiness. This real-world preparation leads to seamless career placement, often before students have even finished their final semester.
We’ve helped place over 450 students in internships, many of whom accepted offers while their peers were still filling out college applications. Our industry partners don’t just visit, they hire.

No College Debt. No Waiting. Just Results.
The traditional college path isn’t the only route to success, especially when it comes with rising costs. ACT provides a better option: no tuition, real work experience, and a pathway to a lifelong career.
Students graduate with industry-recognized credentials, on-the-job experience, and valuable employer connections. With career placement woven into their training experience, they earn money while they learn, avoid college debt, and gain real momentum before their peers even enter the workforce.
We hear it all the time: our students feel confident, prepared, and financially ahead without the wait. They aren’t just learning a trade; they’re launching a career.
A Clear Path from Training to Career
Skilled trades careers are built for growth. ACT students often begin as helpers or apprentices, but with industry-recognized training and consistent performance, they advance quickly. Many become crew leaders, site supervisors, or even business owners.
We go beyond classroom training. We provide mentoring, employer connections, and ongoing support that ensures students don’t just find a job. They build a career. Employers trust our model, and they come back each year to recruit ACT talent because they know our students are ready to deliver.
Our commitment to career placement is more than numbers. It’s about lasting impact. We match students with employers offering real opportunity, advancement, and stability.
Careers You Can Be Proud Of
Skilled trades careers don’t just offer stability. They offer pride. Our students finish real projects, solve tough challenges, and contribute to the growth of their communities. That kind of work matters, and they feel it.
We see students arrive unsure, and leave ready to lead. They walk away with a work ethic, a trade, and a signed offer in hand. That level of career placement success is what keeps employers returning to ACT each year looking for the next generation of skilled talent.
Whether they’ve trained in Birmingham, Mobile, or North Alabama, our students carry the same values: excellence, service, and growth. And it shows in every project they touch.
Give Students the Tools to Succeed
If you’re ready to start building your future now, not four years from now, ACT is ready for you. We work with motivated high school students who want more than just a diploma. We train them, mentor them, and with a clear focus on career placement, we launch them into skilled trades careers with real momentum.
With no tuition, real internships, and a job-ready education, ACT is changing what’s possible for Alabama’s young workforce. Our programs offer more than just training; they offer a chance to explore careers in commercial construction, HVACR mechanical systems, commercial electrical, industrial metal fabrication, and interior/exterior finishes.
Each pathway is designed to support long-term career placement. Students don’t have to wait until college or work to figure things out. They start now, with real mentors, clear goals, and opportunities that lead somewhere.
